Five Simple New Years Resolutions for a

Healthy Diet and a Healthy Planet

Sustainable Foods Expert and Healthy Chef, Gen Anderson, of the TV culinary series Gen's Guiltless Gourmet, shares five simple New Year's Resolutions that give people the power to take charge of their health and the health of the planet.

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) December 30, 2011

Celebrity Chef, Gen Anderson, creator and host of Gen's Guiltless Gourmet, a healthy and eco-conscious cooking series premiering on PBS stations in 2012, unveils her top five New Year's Resolutions for a "healthy planet, healthy you." All of the resolutions call for people to make small changes in their daily diet and shopping habits that have powerful impacts on their health and the environment.

"Consumers can make choices that really affect change in their lives and in the world," Chef Gen says. "Every time someone makes a healthy choice for their family and the environment, it sends a message and makes a direct impact. I think that's an incredibly empowering thing to realize."

As New Year's Resolutions for 2012, Chef Gen invites people to commit to these five simple but powerful changes:

1). Participate in Meatless Monday: forgoing meat once a week not only reduces saturated fat and cholesterol in the diet, it also reduces the water, fuel, and grain needed to produce meat and the pollutants and byproducts created by large-scale meat farming. In addition, meatless options like beans and lentils are very budget-friendly.

2). Make healthy swaps: Substitute items like almond milk, vegan cheeses and vegetable margarine for butter and full fat-dairy products in recipes. Swapping one serving of each saves approximately 75mg of cholesterol and 7 grams of saturated fat each day. Raising dairy cows also has a high water and energy cost, so even a small reduction has a major positive impact on the planet.

3). Commit to organic whenever possible: Chef Gen encourages her viewers to shop organic whenever possible. But if an all-organic diet seems out of reach, consider going organic for at least breakfast and snacks. Switching to organic fruit and cereal won't overwhelm the food budget, and it will spare families and the planet a lot of pesticides!

4). Consider portion control: Face it; many of us just eat too much. Serve a sensible amount and refrigerate or freeze leftovers immediately. Something as simple as portion control will help save on the budget, the waistline and resources.

5). Clean green: Use eco-friendly cleaning products that don't contain phosphates or harmful chemicals to clean the kitchen and home. This will keep harmful chemicals away from the family and out of the water supply.

As her own commitment for the new year, Chef Gen is resolving to provide a new Meatless Monday recipe on her website every week in 2012 to help people commit to these resolutions!

Healthy Food Expert Chef Gen Anderson Offers Up Delicious Recipe Tips for a Heart-Healthy Holiday Season

Chef Gen, creator and host of the TV cooking series Gen's Guiltless Gourmet, takes a stand against heart disease and high cholesterol this holiday season. Chef Gen offers expert recipe tips on how to make your holiday favorites high in flavor and low in cholesterol.

Los Angeles, California December 17, 2011

Healthy Food Expert Chef Gen Anderson offers up some delicious recipe tips for a Heart-Healthy Holiday Season.

Gen Anderson, producer and dynamic host of Gen's Guiltless Gourmet, a unique healthy and eco-conscious cooking show that airs on ION Life, is encouraging her viewers to go heart-healthy this holiday season. With her enthusiastic style, she is determined to show them that heart healthy doesn't have to mean bland and dull meals.

Heart disease and high cholesterol are health issues that affect millions of people. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 6 adults in the United States have high cholesterol, and the average cholesterol level among all adult Americans is "borderline high risk."

"We think of heart disease as something that affects us later in life," explained Chef Gen. "But the rate of heart disease amongst people 25 to 45 is significant. That's something we can change with the right foods."

Chef Gen's philosophy on Gen's Guiltless Gourmet is to use "clever ingredient substitutions and creative cooking methods" to make decadent, gourmet recipes healthier and more eco-friendly. This holiday season, she's turning her attention to making typically fat- and cholesterol-laden holiday recipes more heart healthy, but equally delicious.

Chef Gen offers some easy solutions:

  •     Using Earth-Balance for Baking instead of butter will take the cholesterol out of your Christmas cookies. Another option is to cut the butter in the cookie recipe in half and use half fat-free cream cheese.
  •     Use fat-free sour cream or soy sour cream and a little non-hydrogenated vegetable margarine in your mashed potatoes to keep them rich and creamy with a lot less fat.
  •     Try a non-dairy eggnog brand or make your own from almond milk and Egg-Beaters and you will avoid the cholesterol.

"During this festive season, people often load up on indulgences without a second thought. I want to show people that being conscious of heart health doesn't mean you have to miss out on your holiday favorites."

Ion Life goes green with Gen’s Guiltless Gourmet, an
eco-friendly approach to healthy, gourmet cooking

SANTA MONICA, CA – September 10th, 2009 -- “Eco-friendly, socially responsible, gourmet international cuisine, using healthy, organic ingredients, and creative cooking methods inspired by kitchens and cultures from around the globe,” is definitely a mouthful. With Gen’s Guiltless Gourmet, Ion Life’s new episodic cooking show, every mouthful is not only guiltless, but absolutely delicious.

Gen’s Guiltless Gourmet premiered on the Ion Life network on Tuesday, September 1, 2009. For local times and listings, visit and search by zip code. Hosted by Gen Anderson, the show takes viewers on a culinary tour of gourmet foods from around the world… with a twist! In a time of mounting health problems and ecological crises, Gen’s healthy ingredient substitutions and creative cooking methods demonstrate how simple changes in diet and shopping can improve not only our health, but the planet’s as well.

“The ingredients are organic, the sets are made from sustainable wood, we cook with electricity instead of gas, even my makeup and wardrobe are from eco-friendly companies,” explains Gen. “I want to show how easy and exciting a healthy lifestyle can be!”

Gen’s passion for gourmet food, healthy living and a sustainable environment came together in 1994 when she published HealthMap Manhattan, a popular guide to healthy living in New York City. Later, Gen’s work in the film industry took her around the world, where her culinary experiences culminated in her unique approach to gourmet cooking.

Producer/Director Gary Tachell of Third Point Productions met Gen when she worked on the television show Star Trek: Enterprise in 2004. Together, they created a cooking show that would do more than just change someone’s waistline. With over 22,000 hours behind the camera, Gary helped Gen raise the bar for television production. By using eco-friendly products and building materials, and working with socially responsible companies, the production of Gen’s Guiltless Gourmet is every bit as green as the recipes Gen creates for her viewers.

The show combines elegance and sophistication with comfortable familiarity. Gen is a relaxed and gracious host with a light and colloquial style, sharing easy to make recipes that are a perfect fit for any occasion. She welcomes her audience to her kitchen by including a viewer challenge in each episode: A viewer submits a favorite meal or dessert that Gen recreates as a healthier and more eco-friendly dish, often using vegetarian or Vegan-friendly ingredients.

Whether you’re looking to loose weight, eat healthy or go green, Gen’s Guiltless Gourmet has the perfect recipe for a better tomorrow.
